Jolly Phonics – "Calepin de sons"
Mon "calepin de sons" is the little booklet of the letters of the alphabet that I give each family at the beginning of the year. Each page includes a letter tracer and a picture of the action to go along with it. This will help your child review simple letter sounds. Research tells us that the single best predictor of future reading success is a child’s ability to visually recognize letters and correctly associate them with their sounds by the end of kindergarten.
*Note: I will post a sound each week, and I am currently working on your booklet so each family can have a copy at home.
What are parents expected to do?
The ‘Calepin de sons’ should STAY at home. Please review it for 1-2 minutes every night. Flip through the pages with your child and have him/her go over the sounds.
Ask your child to:
-TRACE the letter with their finger, starting at the dot and following the arrows.
-SAY the sound the letter makes
-SHOW the action that goes with the sound
It is important that your child be able to give the sound for each letter in a random order. As we learn more and more letters, do not go from beginning to end each night. Mix up the sequence to ensure your child has not just memorized the sound order.
